Why Ukraine and Poland?
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, prompting millions of people to flee the conflict and seek refuge in Ukraine and its neighbouring countries. Poland is hosting the majority of Ukrainian refugees officially registered across Europe. The actual figure is likely much higher since many people have not yet been registered. In Ukraine, the International Organization for Migration reports that more than 6.6. million people remain internally displaced.
In the first days after the conflict began, Medair deployed an emergency team to Poland and Ukraine to assist Ukrainians fleeing the conflict. Our team now includes approximately 165 team members, and we are fully operational in both countries.
How you can help
This crisis continues to change, sometimes very quickly. In Bucha, Sumy, and Chernihiv, Medair is working to help people who live where active conflict has damaged homes and health clinics. In Poland, Medair teams are responding to the needs of refugees and the families who are hosting them. In western Ukraine we are helping civic centres and schools accommodate families who need a place to stay while they decide what to do next; as well as rehabilitating dilapidated rural houses where many IDPs have now decided to reside. They have most often come directly from an area of conflict. Our teams must be agile, and your help is vital to our ability to provide what is needed, where people are needing support. This will look different in every community, and your gifts allow us to purchase equipment for medical centres, rehabilitate homes affected by the conflict, provide cash support for families who have left their homes and livelihoods, provide mental health provision, and operate a safe space for women and children arriving at train stations in Poland.
