Drought in Southern Madagascar: Take action for lasting access to water

Be a lifeline to people living in crisis.

Together, we can break the cycle of thirst and vulnerability.
Medair delivers life saving aids to vulnerable communities in need in hard-to-reach place

Life can change in an instant. When it does, we are there.

When disasters and conflicts tear communities apart, Medair responds quickly because people’s lives are on the line. We work in highly unstable environments, going where the needs are greatest, providing life-saving support in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach places.

We save lives

In times of disaster, disease and conflict, we are ready within hours to deliver life-sustaining humanitarian aid.

We restore hope

We help people in crisis have hope for the future by providing them the support they need to rebuild their lives.

We partner generously

We work closely with other organisations and the communities we serve – acting out of a spirit of respect, compassion and dignity.

The crisis

Southern Madagascar is one of the regions most affected by climate change worldwide. Years of recurring drought and destructive cyclones have devastated crops, made clean water scarce, and left communities in deep food insecurity.

Medair’s response

Since 2018, Medair has been working in the rural and remote commune of Marolinta to improve access to safe water. In partnership with local authorities and communities, we have:

  • Built 38 water points and a 28 km water network
  • Brought clean water to over 20’000 people
  • Connected 6 villages to a gravity-fed system carrying water from a main source to a reservoir atop the Mahafaly plateau

Thanks to your support, we will be able to connect 3 additional villages, including one school, to the water network. This will:

  • Provide clean water to 1’000 people at an average distance of only 600 metres from their homes
  • Reduce long and exhausting journeys to fetch water
  • Raise awareness among 3’500 people on safe water use and hygiene practices
  • Strengthen the local management committee to ensure sustainable maintenance of the infrastructure

Your impact

Every gift helps bring lasting change to the people of Southern Madagascar:

  • CHF 8 → Teach 5 people safe hygiene and water conservation practices
  • CHF 12 → Provide a household water & hygiene kit
  • CHF 50 → Support the installation of a secure water access point
  • CHF 100 → Fund materials for pipeline construction
  • CHF 250 → Provide safe water access for 25 people
  • CHF 3,000 → Install a secure water system for a village
