The war continues. And life does, too

In northeastern Ukraine, in conflict-affected areas where temperatures plunge to -19°C, families endure their harshest winter in years. Heating systems fail. Water supplies are disrupted. A missing window becomes a health risk.

The war has entered a prolonged phase defined by endurance rather than movement. The intensification of airstrikes – from 1,000 monthly to over 5,200 – shapes daily life through constant outages and alerts. Winter magnifies every vulnerability.

This is the part of war we rarely speak about: the gradual erosion of security, stability, and mental wellbeing. Children show signs of anxiety and developmental delays. Adults speak of exhaustion. The elderly remain alone in damaged homes.

For many, leaving has never been realistic. Economic, logistical, and emotional barriers mean people stay, absorbing the full weight of the conflict.
