Damascus, Syria. 03. Oct.2022

Since 2015, Medair has conducted activities to increase access to clean and safe drinking water under high global standards, for vulnerable communities in nine governorates across Syria. In 2022 alone, Medair implemented 8 water projects that include repairing water stations, boreholes, and waterlines in Damascus, Aleppo, Deir-ez-Zor, Hamah, and Homs.

The Syrian Ministry of Health is currently posting daily updates on the cholera situation in Syria. The Ministry is also urging people to take precautions to fight the further spread of cholera. As of the 1st of October, according to the Ministry’s official Facebook page, 524 confirmed cases, and 36 deaths.

“Medair’s health team is responding in one of its supported health centres in Al-Raqqa, by providing the necessary medical consumables to treat and evaluate about 1,000 acute dehydration patients due to watery diarrhea.” Dr. Vlad Shaddad, Medair’s Health, and Nutrition Advisor in Syria.

“Medair also trains community health workers, and as a part of their training is the door-to-door awareness and messages on hygiene behaviors to prevent the spread of acute diarrhea illnesses, including cholera.” Dr. Vlad added.

Medair will continue supporting vulnerable communities by providing clean and safe water and improving access to health care with coordination from the Syrian Ministry of Health, who is currently issuing precautions to prevent the further spread of cholera, along with a daily update of the active cases and deaths.
