Why do the Malagasy need you?
On Saturday 5 February, Cyclone Batsirai devastated eastern Madagascar, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Strong winds and torrential rains have devastated several regions in the south-east of the island, causing flooding and landslides that have caused rivers to overflow their banks.
The needs are immense. A considerable number of survivors are in great distress as they have lost everything: their homes and their crops.
The most urgent needs are to:
- Provide access to water, sanitation and hygiene. It is vital to re-establish access to drinking water as soon as possible, to disinfect wells, to distribute kits and to install access to water and hygiene in the sites where people have taken refuge in order to avoid the spread of epidemics and water-borne diseas
- Providing for the basic needs of survivors who will have to stay in saturated evacuation centres as long as the rain and strong winds continue.
