Afghanistan: Relief workers abducted in Badakhshan, Afghanistan.
On May 22, four Medair relief workers were abducted by a group of armed men during a visit to relief project sites in Badakhshan province, Afghanistan.
"Medair is working closely with the relevant authorities and doing all we can to secure the safe and swift release of our colleagues. We have informed the families and are in close contact with them. Our thoughts are with our colleagues and their families,” says Medair spokesperson, Aurélien Demaurex.
Medair is requesting that everyone, including the media, exercise restraint in commenting publicly on the situation. “Publicity at this point can only jeopardize efforts to secure the release of our staff and prolong the pain of their families,” says Demaurex. “We request that the media respect the privacy of the families during this difficult time.”
To facilitate a safe and prompt resolution of the matter, Medair will not be providing further information at this time and will not comment on statements, rumours or other information relating to the situation.
Medair has worked in Afghanistan since 1996, providing relief to Afghanistan’s most vulnerable and isolated communities.
