Medair warns of a worsening food crisis in Somalia/Somaliland and issues an urgent call for support in a statement jointly released with 30 other relief organisations.
An estimated 2.4 million Somalis, almost a third of the country’s population, are currently living in crisis due to one of the worst droughts in recent memory, as well as due to the ongoing conflict. The recent drought has impacted the already volatile food security situation, killing livestock in huge numbers, and leading to skyrocketing cereal prices in the country.
With a major funding shortfall, aid agencies have insufficient resources to address the needs of those affected but, while access remains a challenge, they are doing what they can in difficult circumstances.

Medair has been working in Somalia and Somaliland since 2008. In Burao, Somaliland, Medair provides nutritional support, health services, and improved access to water, sanitation, and hygiene to people severely impacted by chronic drought and conflict. Somaliland declared itself independent from Somalia in 1991. Its independence has not been recognised by the international community.
