Becoming a Medair field worker

The first step in becoming a Medair field worker is to apply for the mandatory Relief and Rehabilitation Orientation Course (ROC) *. As there is a significant time lapse between when candidates apply for the ROC and when they are eventually able to leave for the field, applicants do not apply for specific positions until Day 8 of the ROC.

While Medair endeavors to take candidates' country/position placement preferences into account, we cannot guarantee their fulfillment. Candidates are placed according to how their profile best meets the most urgent need.

If, however, you have already completed the ROC and would like to consult a list of the most recent field vacancies, please visit Field management vacancies.

* Candidates who are currently residents of the country in which they would like to work with Medair are not considered to be expatriate staff and do not need to complete the ROC. To apply for positions in your country of residence/citizenship, please contact your local Medair office directly.

Initial training and evaluation:

All candidates for Medair field positions are required to complete the ROC, prior to leaving for their first field assignment. The ROC is a 8-day training and evaluation course that takes place three times a year in a European country. The objective of the course is to have candidates experience the challenges of relief work firsthand as well as become familiar with Medair's projects and values.

The ROC provides the ideal opportunity for both candidates and Medair alike to assess the suitability of future collaboration. Please note that due to the evaluative nature of this course, Medair cannot guarantee placement upon completion of the ROC.

The ROC implies a certain level of physical activity. As such, all candidates applying for the course certify that they are in good health and are capable of participating in the entire program . Any special health conditions (e.g. special diet requirements, pregnancy, disability, etc.) must be specified in the online registration form.

The purpose of the ROC is to introduce participants to:

The culture and values of Medair
The challenges of working/living in multicultural teams, in different cultures and in insecure environments
A broad range of relief related issues including practical exercises
The biblical principles of relief work
The ethical and spiritual problems encountered by relief workers

Cost of ROC
  1. The application fee is € 35.00, payable upon Medair's confirmation of registration. Payment of the application fee begins the application process. You will receive a more detailed Application and Reference Form shortly thereafter.
  2. Course fees are € 500.00 (including room and board), payable after acceptance and no later than 5 days after receiving your ROC admission confirmation. Without this payment we cannot guarantee your participation. Should you cancel your participation later than 20 days before course begin, Medair will not refund your tuition. After this period, a full or partial refund may only be granted in exceptional cases.
