According to article 59 of the Swiss Federal Constitution, the civil service can substitute the compulsory military service. It cannot be chosen at will; however, as only the military itself can grant access to this specific form of compulsary military duty. Only those who can credibly prove that they are conscientious objectors and are deemed fit for military service can be admitted into the civil service.

As an international humanitarian aid organization, Medair offers eligible civil service candidates the possibility to fulfill their civil service obligations in one of two ways:

• Posting at Medair International Headquarters (Switzerland)
  Administrative assistant position in Ecublens, (near Lausanne) for a minimum of three months. (2 positions available simultaneously)

• Postings overseas
  Positions in disaster areas for a minimum of one year as one of the following: doctor, nurse, midwife, logistician, water/sanitation specialist. (30 positions available simultaneously)

  Requirements and Application Procedure
  People wishing to serve abroad must comply with all standard Medair recruitment requirements, including the successful completion of a 10-day Relief and Rehabilitation training course (ROC).
