2009 Overview

Emergency Relief
West Darfur:

  • 300,486 consultations in 24 PHC (Primary Health Care) clinics  
  • 6,591 midwife-assisted deliveries


South Kordofan:

  • 11 PHC clinics successfully handed over to the health authorities  
  • 13,590 children received childhood vaccinations
  • 2,130 women of childbearing age received tetanus injections
  • 7,100 beneficiaries reached with health messages on bilharzia and HIV/AIDS, with 5,300 treated for bilharzia
WASH

Emergency Relief
West Darfur:

  • 155,000 people provided with safe drinking water
  • 52 pump mechanics trained and making repairs
  • 770 emergency latrines constructed, 6 boreholes drilled


South Kordofan:

  • 12 boreholes drilled, providing safe water to 19,926 beneficiaries
  • 103 pump mechanics trained


Rehabilitation
West Darfur:

  • 2,648 latrines built or rehabilitated
  • 5 boreholes drilled to enable use of 1 water tower and 1 high-capacity water yard


South Kordofan

  • 1 water yard rehabilitated, providing reliable water for a community of 1,400
  • 279 latrines built or rehabilitated plus materials provided for 130 latrines
  • 11,600 people received hygiene promotion training
  • 3,600 people assisted through rainwater harvesting systems

2008 Overview

Total beneficiaries served:  420,000

Emergency Relief
Khartoum State:

  • 2,531 (monthly average) patient consultations at PHCC
  • 1,417 (monthly average) household visits for health promotion
  • 450 pregnant and lactating mothers each month enrolled in 12-week health education programme


Southern Kordofan:

  • 9 of 20 Medair-supported clinics handed over to MoH and SoH
  • 49 community teaching sessions conducted


West Darfur:

  • 321,872 outpatient consultations in 20 PHCCs
  • 10 medical assistants, 35 community health workers, 56 midwives, and 86 clinic assistants given annual refresher training
WASH

Emergency Relief
Southern Kordofan:

  • 209 latrines in 5 locations
  • 10 new boreholes drilled

West Darfur:

  • 108,000 people provided with sufficient water supply
  • 9,000 people provided with water through emergency water system
  • 1,135 household latrines
  • 3 new boreholes drilled to recommission a water tower


Rehabilitation
Khartoum State:

  • 19 sets of community latrines handed over to the community

Southern Kordofan:

  • 4 rainwater harvesting systems installed

  • 710 plastic sheets provided to assist 355 households after shelters damaged by heavy rains

  • 2,500 plastic sheets distributed to assist with shelter during severe weather

West Darfur:

  • 1 Hepatitis E outbreak responded to within 5 days
  • 20 health facilities supported, with 300,000 patient consultations
  • 10,000 births attended by Medair-supported midwives
  • 900 health promotion workers supervised


Rehabilitation

Khartoum State:

  • 50,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) supported through 1 clinic and 2 mobile clinics
  • 1,800 homes visited each month with health messages

Southern Kordofan:

  • 20 health facilities supported
WASH

Emergency Relief
West Darfur:

  • 3 emergency responses conducted in Bir Dageeg, Kondebe, and Um Shelaya
  • 130,000 people given access to water supply
  • 52 mechanics trained to repair and maintain water points
  • 2,000 latrines constructed


Rehabilitation
Southern Kordofan:

  • 7,500 people with improved access to safe water
  • 4 rainwater harvesting systems completed, and 112 bio-sand filters constructed

2006 Overview

  • Support of 3,000 Chadian refugees with emergency health clinic
  • Emergency responses to various health outbreaks throughout its project regions

  • Supported 43 Public Health Care Centres (PHCC)/Units (PHCU)
  • Supported two mobile clinics
  • Immunisation provided to 65,000 people
  • Health education provided to over 230,000 beneficiaries
  • Training of midwives and health staff
  • Improvements to reproductive health access, including more safe delivery areas
  • Distribution of over 5,000 mosquito nets
Water & Sanitation (WatSan)

Emergency Relief

  • Establishment of emergency water system for new camp arrivals in West Darfur
  • Safe water access provided for 3,000 Chadian refugees
  • Latrines constructed to support cholera treatment centre in Khartoum State

 

Rehabilitation

  • 26 new water points and 9 rehabilitated water points
  • Maintenance of water systems supporting 110,000 people
  • Provision of materials for nearly 8,000 household latrines
  • Establishment of rainwater harvesting systems
  • Hygiene promotion provided to 145,000 people

  • 16,000 people received antibiotics to combat blindness-causing trachoma, with over 150 eyelid-rotation surgeries performed.
  • Distribution of 6,500 mosquito nets
  • Hygiene promotion for 261,000 beneficiaries
  • Health promotion for 20,000 beneficiaries
  • Training of midwives, health/hygiene providers, clinic assistants, and community health workers
  • Immunisation for 260,000 people
  • Increased access to reproductive health care services
  • 30 Village Health Committees (VHCs) supported and trained

  • Distribution of over 7,000 jerry cans to displaced people in Khartoum area
