Shelter & Infrastructure
Medair is supporting many earthquake-affected communities throughout the urban and rural parts of Haiti’s Sud- Est Department. In Haiti, the earthquake caused 188,383 homes to collapse, of which 105,000 were completely destroyed [8].
Due to a lack of resources, much of the population cannot afford to rebuild their destroyed homes. The projects also strategically create cash-for-work opportunities for people who have few livelihood options.
Emergency Relief
In the aftermath of the earthquake, Medair removed rubble, repaired houses, and provided emergency and transitional shelter for families. We continue to provide safer shelter for families in the Sud-Est Department. To stimulate the local economy, Medair offers cash-for-work to local labourers, masons, and carpenters to assist with the construction of the shelters.
Rehabilitation
In the Côtes-de-Fer region, we are providing new, permanent shelters for 250 of the most vulnerable families in the area and we are repairing hundreds of additional homes for families whose houses were damaged in the earthquake. This project focuses on increasing community knowledge about safer construction techniques. Medair’s project is providing many jobs in the area, including cash-for-work opportunities.
WASH
In the remote Côtes-de-Fer region, open defecation is widely practiced and access to water is limited. The time spent collecting water can be disruptive to the schooling of children and to the livelihood activities of adults. Poor hygiene practices put the population at risk of cholera and other diseases.
Rehabilitation
Medair is constructing rainwater harvesting systems and latrines for the most vulnerable families, as well as educating communities about basic health and hygiene practices and the hazards of open defecation.
