A Day in the Life

In September 2009, Medair’s Emma Le Beau journeyed to isolated communities in Afghanistan to speak directly with women at their homes.

As she helped them with their daily chores, she listened and learned about their lives, their hopes, and their needs.

Women in Afghanistan

Generally life for women in Afghanistan is very difficult. We work very hard.

Women in Afghanistan

It is also very different types of work. We are multi-skilled, not like the men who only have one job to do.

Women in Afghanistan

We collect the water.

Women in Afghanistan

We gather grass on the mountain to feed our animals.

Women in Afghanistan

We carry the grass back to our homes.

Women in Afghanistan

Here, Emma is shown how to cut the grass.

Women in Afghanistan

We make the naan bread.

Women in Afghanistan

We do all the cooking.

Women in Afghanistan

When we have enough milk we make yoghurt by shaking a goat skin back and forth for an hour. But sometimes the goat skin has holes in it so we lose some.

Women in Afghanistan

We look after the animals – milking them and feeding them. It’s a big part of our work.

Women in Afghanistan

We are always working.

Women in Afghanistan

We worry about the long, cold winter that is coming. We hope we will have enough food for our children.

Women in Afghanistan

The best thing about our life is when we are healthy. If you are not healthy then you can do nothing.

Women in Afghanistan

Too often, the water comes from contaminated streams and dirty ponds that make people sick.

Women in Afghanistan

We know we need safe drinking water so the spring protection that Medair is bringing is good.

Women in Afghanistan

So far Medair have taught us what to do about diarrhoea, about good hand-washing practices, and about making oral rehydration solution. I will now teach this to the other women.

Women in Afghanistan

My daughters are going to school and they will be educated, so if they get a job then they won’t have to work in the fields as hard as we have to do. Hopefully their lives will be easier than ours.
