Two year old Nyajang was brought to our clinic suffering from Kala-azar, a potentially fatal parasitic disease affecting the internal organs. Nyajang lost a lot of weight, became listless and sores around her mouth were making her unable to eat. Her life was in real danger.
Thankfully Medair’s Emergency Response Team were able to offer Nyajang the specialist care she needed. The team talked to her mother and explained the benefits of feeding Nyajang with a tube. At first she was unsure and wanted to take her daughter home, but after understanding how they worked, she allowed the team to insert the tube – enabling feeding directly into Nyajang’s stomach.
After just five days of tube feeding and Kala-azar treatment, Nyajang started to regain her strength. Now Nyajang weighs 9kg and is almost within the normal weight range for a child of her age. In such a short time her life has been transformed. And very soon, with her treatment almost complete, she will go home with a very thankful mother.
