Medair has been working in South Sudan since 1992 and is one of the most active humanitarian relief organisations in the country. Since the end of 2013, conflict has devastated millions of lives. Alarming levels of malnutrition are seen across the country and the rates are higher than anywhere else in the world. Families have been uprooted. There are outbreaks of deadly disease. There is limited access to safe water and sanitation. Women have few places to safely give birth. Thousands of lives are at risk.

The need for humanitarian aid is enormous. In addition, the insecurity, lack of useable roads, and harsh terrain make it challenging for humanitarian relief organisations to reach the isolated families who most need life-saving help.

Emergency Response – Medair responds to sudden emergencies like floods, disease outbreaks, high levels of malnutrition, and mass displacement across the entire country. We have teams of experts in health, nutrition, hygiene, safe drinking water, sanitation, shelter, and distribution of essential supplies who are able to respond quickly and bring swift relief to hundreds of thousands of people across the country each year.

Health & Nutrition –  When emergencies turn into longer lasting crises, Medair stays to support existing or establish new health centres and build up the strength of local health services for displaced people and their struggling host communities. We also run nutrition programming where needed to treat malnourished children and women affected by the conflict.

Safe Drinking Water & Sanitation – Where needed, Medair works in vulnerable areas to ensure that people have access to safe drinking water and hygienic latrines.
